What to Wear to a Nalangu Ceremony as a Guest
For nalangu, a cotton or chanderi coord set or kurta set in yellow, green, or pink is the right call. Chanderi is a fine woven fabric, between everyday cotton and silk in weight, that handles the heat and close quarters of nalangu well. A heavy lehenga or formal silk saree belongs at the wedding itself, not here.
Nalangu is a pre-wedding ceremony from South Indian tradition, usually held the morning of or the day before the wedding. The couple sits together while family members apply turmeric paste, exchange garlands, play games, and celebrate with music. It is informal and close-quarters with family on all sides, plenty of noise, a lot of joy. Guests are near enough to be part of it. The dress code matches: festive, lightweight, and not your best outfit.
What the occasion actually calls for
Nalangu sits closer to haldi in its energy than to the wedding reception. The right outfit for a guest is something festive, not formal.
A salwar kameez, a coord set, or a kurta set with a dupatta all work. You want colour and some occasion-wear polish, but not the weight of embellished reception wear. A plain everyday kurta will read as underdressed. A heavily beaded lehenga or a bridal saree tells the room you got the event wrong.
Colour matters here: yellow, lime green, rani pink, coral, rust, and warm orange are all appropriate. White and black are best avoided. Most South Indian families consider both inauspicious at wedding events. When in doubt, land on something warm and bright.
Fabric first, and the turmeric question
Nalangu involves turmeric. The couple has haldi applied by family members, and guests seated anywhere near the centre of the room can get splashed. We have seen it happen enough times that we mention it without hesitation.
Turmeric on cotton or chanderi washes out cleanly with a proper soak. On polyester or synthetic georgette, it sets into the weave differently. On a fine silk, it can be close to permanent.
Reach for a cotton coord set in a warm colour. The Yellow Cotton V-Neck Co-Ord Set lands exactly where nalangu sits: festive, washable, and the right colour for the occasion. For a kurta set, the Pink Chanderi Thread Work Kurti Set with Dupatta is light enough for a morning ceremony in a crowded hall and dressed enough that you will not feel underprepared.
If you want to push slightly more formal, a green chanderi kurta set works well. Look for one with a bandhej (a tie-dye print) or embroidered detail — it reads like occasion wear while the chanderi keeps it appropriate near turmeric.
Save the heavier pieces for the wedding reception and main ceremony.
Questions we hear often
Can I wear a saree to nalangu?
A lightweight cotton saree is fine if you are comfortable in one through a busy, informal, seated event. A heavy silk saree is too formal and at risk near turmeric. If you want a saree, keep the fabric light and the occasion in mind.
Is nalangu the same as haldi?
Not exactly. Haldi is the North Indian ceremony where turmeric paste is applied to the couple before the wedding. Nalangu is the South Indian equivalent, but it usually involves more ritual elements, music, and extended family participation. The dress code logic is similar: bright natural fibres, nothing irreplaceable.
What should I avoid wearing to nalangu?
Heavy embellished lehengas, all-white outfits, all-black outfits, and anything in a fabric you would not want stained. The ceremony is informal and close-quarters, and the turmeric is not incidental.
I am not South Indian. Does this advice apply to me?
Yes, and the family will appreciate that you dressed for the specific occasion rather than a generic Indian wedding. Festive, bright, and not your wedding-day best is the right approach regardless of your background.
For fabric care by garment type, the care guide has the specifics.
Most guests outside these traditions arrive at nalangu overdressed and slightly confused about why everyone else seems to have got the memo. The guide on what to wear to a South Indian wedding as a guest has the rest of the schedule, and we ship internationally if you need something specific to your date.
